Palm Sunday – Worship the King

3 KEYS TO WORSHIP

MATTHEW 21:6-11

  1. WORSHIP ALWAYS STARTS WITH PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING

“The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!’”  Matthew 21:9

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”  Psalm 100:4

  1. WORSHIP INVOLVES HUMILITY AND PERSONAL SACRIFICE

“A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.”  Matthew 21:8

The Hebrew scriptures reveal worship involving our entire person, body, mind, heart:

  1. Hebrew ‘Yad’ – hands raised

“May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.”  Psalm 141:2

“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.  And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”  Hebrews 13:15-16

B.  Hebrew ‘Kabod’ – weight of my glory – a heart of worship

“My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music.  Awake, my soul! (my glory)  Awake, harp and lyre!  I will awaken the dawn.  I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples.”  Psalm 57:7-9

  1. WORSHIP IS CONTAGIOUS AND IMPACTS OTHERS BEYOND THE MEETING

“When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’”  Matthew 21:10

“‘And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’  He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.”  John 12:32-33

CONCLUSION:

Let us raise our hands (yad) with our whole hearts (kabod) in worship.
