Staying the Course
Remaining faithful in your destiny
Text – 2 Samuel 11:1-5
- At first, David was unaware that he was vulnerable to a flaw.
1 Samuel 17:25 and 28 – “pride and deceit…”
- Eventually, David was unwittingly feeding his flaw.
- Identifying David’s fatal flaw: pride.
Hubris is defined as excessive pride that brings down a hero. It is an outrageous arrogance or entitlement that inflicts suffering upon the innocent.
“According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere flea bites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.”
― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
4. Finally, David was exposed and undone by flaw.
Conclusion
“The gospel of justifying faith means that while Christians are, in themselves still sinful and sinning, yet in Christ, in God’s sight, they are accepted and righteous… the more you see your own flaws and sins, the more precious, electrifying, and amazing God’s grace appears to you…. the more aware you are of God’s grace and acceptance in Christ, the more able you are to drop your denials and self-defenses and admit the true dimensions and character of your sin.” ― Timothy Keller
