STEPS TO BEARING LASTING FRUIT
Galatians 5:13-26
- I MUST HEED GOD’S ADVICE – A DOUBLE WARNING
A. Walk in the Spirit, not the flesh:
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21
B. Walk in love not division:
For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. Galatians 5:14-15
Serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13
- I MUST LEARN TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT – A NEW IDEA
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16
You must be born again. The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. John 3:7-8
This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6
3 STEPS TO WALKING IN THE SPIRIT:
- INVITE: Ask for God’s blessing and touch on your life. Watching/waiting/reading/listening/praying
- SURRENDER: Submit to God’s ways. Actively submitting myself to God
- DEFER: Defer to God’s wisdom. Changing my mind and my ways to conform with His
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. Galatians 5:7
- I CAN EXPECT TO BEAR MUCH FRUIT – A BEAUTIFUL OUTCOME (WAY OF LIFE)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2
CLOSE: Challenge to walk in the Spirit:
Let’s pretend, for 4 weeks we’re the body of Christ. – Pastor Don Horban, Cedarview Church Newmarket
Yesterday during the morning service, Pastor Don challenged the church body to change what they post on their social media account for the next 4 weeks. To post things that are a blessing to others rather than negative posts related to what is currently happening in the world. Remember when we used to post pics of our food, our kids, the puppy? Let’s get back to that! And for those of you who are Christians, let’s post things that encourage and remind people that there is a Lord who loves them. – Pastor Chris Micks, Cedarview Church, Newmarket
